Beginner and Advanced Jiu-Jitsu Classes

From beginner to advanced – our team accommodates all levels of training.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE, BATTLE-TESTED SELF-DEFENSE TRAINING SYSTEM IN THE WORLD. LEARN HOW TO USE LEVERAGE, STRATEGY, AND TECHNIQUE TO DEFEND YOURSELF FROM THE BIGGEST OF ATTACKERS.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a highly effective and comprehensive system of standing and ground defense techniques utilizing the principles of leverage.  Many real-life examples have shown that most street confrontations end up on the ground.  The ground is where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu shines and is the ideal martial art for these situations which demand simple, effective responses.

The great advantage of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the ability for a smaller, weaker person to learn principles of leverage that will assist them in defending him or herself against a larger opponent.

Beyond it's self-defense potential, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers a tremendous workout emphasizing aerobic and anaerobic conditioning and is enjoyable for women, men and children regardless of athletic ability.

Beginner Classes

A TYPICAL CLASS STARTS WITH WARM-UP EXERCISES THAT INCLUDED RUNNING, CALISTHENICS, STRETCHING, AND JIU-JITSU SPECIFIC DRILLS...

Once the students are warmed up, the instructor begins the days lessons. The instructor will discuss and show a technique from several angles. After the instruction, students will pair off and work the technique out while the instructor (and sometimes senior students) walk around the mat and help those needing individual attention.

After everyone in the class has a basic understanding and ability to do the technique, the instructor will show a follow-up or companion technique to the one previously taught. Again, he will show it from several angles at which point the students will break out in pairs again.

This may happen several times during the course of the class.

The end of most classes includes live training. Live training is often called sparring or rolling live or randori (the Japanese word for freestyle practice).

Rolling live is the practice of pairing off with your fellow students while you spar attempting to use your jiu-jitsu skills versus one-another. In the Beginners Class, we never begin rolling live from the feet. Instead we either start from the knees or from various positions.

A new student must have attended approximately eight classes and have gotten his/her first stripe before being allow to participate in live training.

Advanced Classes

ADVANCED BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU CLASSES ARE FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE A GOOD GRASP OF THE FUNDAMENTALS AND ARE READY FOR A FASTER-PACED, MORE IN-DEPTH LOOK AT THE ART.

The Advanced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes at The Academy are for students that have reached the green/blue belt level and higher, or three and four-stripe white belts that have been invited by a Professor.

Advanced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes build on the foundation learned in the Beginner's Class and students focus on the nuanced details of fundamental jiu-jitsu techniques as well as exposes the students to technically complicated strategies, techniques, and setups.

Students are shown how to push their own limits through training with peers, advanced students, and coaches. The goal of the Advanced Class is to commit the core movements of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to muscle memory and accustom the student to using proper technique despite physical fatigue and stress.
